According to Dr Mikao Usui, The Usui Reiki Therapy is incomparable and is discovered for the first time ever.

That is what Dr Usui wrote in the 1920s. What pushed him to devote his life to finding a system to improve people’s health and happiness? Why did he search knowledge from all manner of information, techniques and methods to put together a systematic therapy that could be used by any one? What was his driving force?

There are several reasons behind why Dr. Usui devoted his life to find a system to improve health and happiness of people? Why he gathered all information and techniques to develop a systematic therapy that can be used by anyone? What has driven him to move in this direction?

One reason given is that in 1890, he suffered from cholera and as this disease was supposed to be equivalent to a death sentence, he was expected to die which was very usual those days. Miraculously he could survive through that disease and this incident made him think over and drove him to devote his time in this research.

During the days of his fasts and meditation on Mount Kurama, certain instances show that all his knowledge came together in a system. As engraved on his tombstone he used to teach several topics under the head of Reiki, he had designed a thorough system to help people in many ways. He has risen through the Japanese navy ranks and became the Naval attaché/ white collar secretary to the foreign minister of Japan Mr. Gotou who later became the prime minister.

Dr. Usui had taught over 2000 people and he died in 1926 with the last wish as “Reiki to be spread around the world”. Reiki system has several different levels and techniques which the students acquire through continuous devoted practice so as to help themselves and others.

The Usui Reiki Gakkai alongwith the practitioners of Usui-do and Dr. Hayashi’ own reiki school and other students and schools linked to Dr. Usui continued Reiki in Japan. The reiki students are encouraged to treat themselves with reiki daily.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata is another such example who also had suffered through a life-threatening illness during 1936 and 1938. Mrs. Takata began teaching reiki in 1970s to students in USA. Her teachings were based on what she had learned from Dr. Hayashi.

The two branches of Reiki – eastern and western have now started to integrate and learn from each other through her efforts to spread reiki around the world. The masters who were taught by Mrs. Takata have gone forward and added their own systems of reiki, majorly the symbols used to access various frequencies. The instances of Karuna, Tera-mai, Seichim and many more are included on to this.

Reiki has always been more than just a system. As the practitioners would practice and find new ways of using it, the system of Reiki will develop always. Reiki is flexible and creative by nature.
